ROBIN KALUS

Director | Writer | Editor

Robin Kalus is a German-born film director, screenwriter and video editor based in Sydney, Gadigal Country. He holds a Master’s degree in Directing from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Media Management from RH Cologne.

With over a decade of industry experience, Robin has worked across multiple disciplines on productions of all shapes and sizes. After starting out as a cameraman and editor for German national broadcaster WDR, he relocated to Auckland, New Zealand, where he freelanced within the local screen industry on productions such as Amazon Studios’ THE WILDS (2020). Returning to Germany, he began working as an assistant director across film and television while producing and directing his short thriller POPPED (2022).

During his time at AFTRS, Robin wrote and directed several short films. In 2024, his short film concept BOY ON THE ROOF was one of five finalists at the AACTA/Sony Pitch: Focus. The following year, his graduation film FRACTURE (2025) premiered domestically at CinefestOZ and internationally at BAFTA-qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York, before going on to screen at Academy Award-qualifying St Kilda Film festival where it was nominated for Best Short Film and won Best Original Score.

Robin’s work explores themes of trauma, identity and self-discovery in the context of complex human relationships, shaped through formalist techniques and raw, exploratory performances. He currently works as a freelance director and script supervisor across short form, commercial and vertical drama content. Additionally, he is a video editor for SBS World News.

As of 2026, Robin is in development on his debut feature alongside several short-form projects.
